Caregiver Burden: The Forgotten Patient

Overview: Caregiver Burden is defined as the perceived burden and its adverse effects on caregiving on an individuals’ emotional, social, financial, spiritual and physical functioning. This interactive presentation will discuss the phenomena of caregiver burden, its presentation, and the effects of caregiving on caregivers and other family members. Interactive discussion continues throughout the presentation, and includes how and why caregiver burden often goes unrecognized and untreated in persons caring for individuals with mental illnesses. A toolkit, including schedules of caregiver health screenings, wellness strategies, evidence based self-care strategies, and other tools are included in the discussion, designed to build caregiver and family resilience and how to sustain this caregiver role easily over time. Objectives: 1. Define carefiver burden and discuss how to recognize its symptoms, presentation and the effects caregiving has on caregivers and family members. 2. Analyze how common caregiver burden is an how often this condition goes unrecognized and untreated in persons caring for individuals with mental illnesses. 3. Assemble tools for health screenings, identifying caregiver strengths, aptitudes, and both positive and negative coping, the aim to build self-care strength and resilience to sustain a COVID and othe risk free and safer environments to sustain the caregiving role. Key Learning: Strategies including screening and immunization schedules for caregivers, designed to build resilience for both caregiver and loved one. Step wise process for identifying caregiver strengths, selecting and incorporating strategies into caregiving, all while shoring up caregivers' mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and physical functioning. Empowering caregivers how to prepare for post-COVID, how to keep safe and shift the perception of burden into a perception of engagement and embrace the caregiving role over time.

It is also great to share with co-workers or friends that are also looking to make themselves and their health a higher priority this year. Making yourself a priority is not only necessary, it also enables you to give more to others. When you take care of yourself, both in body and mind, you are going to be capable of doing so much more! If you find it hard to make time for yourself and your wellbeing, then Self-Care Bingo should help. It is a fun and motivational way to remember to take care of yourself amidst work, schoolwork, activities, meetings and whatever else life throws at you. Times are stressful right now for all kinds of reasons, which makes it extra important to take care of ourselves. During this game you will learn, or remind yourself of, ways you can create mini-me moments throughout the day to help recharge. Mental Health and Chronic Diseases: How Do They Affect Each Other and Why Should We Care?

There is a lack of public awareness of the implications of behavioral health on chronic diseases and vice-versa. The presentation will highlight why each of these facets of health cannot be ignored to promote one’s overall health and quality of life. There is a vital link between mental health and chronic diseases. Having one condition can be a risk factor for another. However, early interventions to stop one disease initiation process can prevent many other negative health outcomes. Through this presentation, the audience will be able to: 1. Understand the role of mental health on chronic diseases development and vice versa. 2. Learn ways of integrating health promotion programs that address both chronic diseases and mental illnesses. 3. Understand how to adopt a systems approach to address the co-occurrence of these conditions.

Participants will consider perspectives of Viktor Frankl and Logotherapy as it relates to finding purpose in difficult situations.
